Is it possible to find career success just by following your heart?
Do you find yourself doubting every decision, questioning your own judgement, grappling with decisions that made perfect sense before you had to actually do something? Me too.
Every time I am heading out to new things, I battle to make the decisions that I know in my heart are right.
Take leaving my job. I was ready to leave almost three years before I left. It wasn’t that I was unhappy in my work, no it wasn’t that. It was that niggling doubt; what if I am wrong. What if I fail? What if I succeed?
Finally, the time was right. I was determined to resign but even then, I had a massive backflip in making my decision. What about the money? What about … what about … what about … well finally I ran out of excuses.
And left my job. Started Excited for Mondays. Backed myself.
Here’s how I worked it out.
It did look impossible.
All sorts of objections came through my mind. I had spent 10+ years working hard to ‘build’ my job to what it became. This was who I was!
But in reality, I didn’t own my job. Lots of people could do what I did and could bring new things to the job. So, I let go a little.
Risky business
Taking risks goes with the territory when you’re in business. I know that only too well. Having ridden out quite a few storms of life, I knew that even if it was risky, I had history with making it through tough times. It will be ok.
Reasons to stay …
My sense of reason kicked in with, “Really? Why? Just stay and get paid for what you’re going to do anyway.” I wasn’t inclined to listen too much to the voice of reason. I had really started to believe that new things were ahead for me. I was ready for change.
Heart whispers
So, I gave it a try.
I remembered, that I know my stuff. It’s what I do. I help people. I love doing my job.
I am working it out. I am thankful for the new people I have met. And, as always, thinking of new things to do most days! Only one lifetime, but I want to live it well.
That’s my story. What’s yours?
